Plug-in electric vehicles (EVs) are viewed as a step forward in the electrification of transportation, replacing conventional vehicles powered by internal combustion engines. However, to provide consistent and efficient charging, the EV charging infrastructure needs to be developed, which is capable of delivering distortion-free grid supply, even in the absence of renewable energy resources. This article presents an application of a grid-connected EV charger supplied by a grid-connected solar photovoltaic array that provides 24/7 distortion-free charging. The bidirectional charging system includes an EV battery connected to the dc bus; an independent solar-PV source connected to the ac grid through a bifunctional voltage source converter. A new conjugate gradient based adaptive control algorithm is implemented for the voltage source converter control. Real-time analysis is done using dSPACE 1202 processor. The proposed system is validated to maintain IEEE-519 standards.
